Diaper Cakes & Baby Showers

diapersLately it has seemed that all my friends are getting pregnant. As soon as I attend one baby shower, I am hearing of another friend having a baby. It is hard to know what each baby is going to end up using as far as bouncers and swings; also that gets pretty pricey after awhile. Everyone is buying the babies clothing so that doesn’t work either. There is one thing, however, that all babies will need diapers. One could purchase just a straight box of diapers and wrap it, or you can get creative. I enjoy being creative and love to make diaper cakes for my friend. Whether I buy a box of diapers and wrap it, or buy a box and roll them, they cost the same. What I really enjoy doing is going to a dollar store and stocking up on pacifiers, wash clothes, bottles and more and then digging into that stash when making a cake. The best cakes I have seen form baby shapes, like a buggy, but I am not at that level yet. I am happy to make a three tier cake that is wrapped around a bottle in the middle. I use rubber bands to help the diapers keep their shape. To attach the extras, pacifiers and washcloths, I use ribbon around the outside of the cake. Other things that can be tucked in are travel size bottles of soap, baby lotion, and even pacifier clips. There is no reason to spend more than thirty dollars on a cake but I suggest making one layer with newborn size diapers and the rest with size one. You never know how big a baby will be but there is some overlapping between the sizes. The mother will be grateful for one less thing to worry about and it is so cute it requires no extra wrapping.
